An Open Letter to Manny Pacquiao From a Gay Filipina American

There as been a lot of outrage, anger and disappointment surround Manny Pacquiao’s recent stance towards same-sex marriage. As a Queer identified Filipino(a)… I find this open letter to Manny Pacquiao to be incredibly true and heartfelt letter towards the Filipino hero. It bypasses the anger and resentment and goes for the heart, begging for an understanding.

Her letter ends with an open invitation,

I want to invite you to spend some time with me and my friends. […] I want you to hear our love stories. I want you to eat with us. I want you to laugh with us. I want you to see our bruises. I want you to sing karaoke with us. I want you to see how we sing even though we’re bruised, too. I know there’s a better heart in you, Kuya Manny, that would beat with more than the repetitive ill will you bear toward us in the biblical abstract. If you spent some time with us — if you saw the specific sweetness that makes up our human pursuit of love and marriage — maybe you’d think, you’d feel, you’d change. The way my parents have changed toward me. The way my President has changed toward me. The way I’ve changed toward myself.

This would have been a great invitation, and in a separate article Pacquiao (unknowingly) responded with…

“I’m not against the gay people,” Pacquiao said. “I’m not condemning them. … I have a cousin (who is) gay. I have relatives (who are) gay. I have a lot of friends (who are) gay, so I’m not condemning gays. What I said is I’m not in favor of same-sex marriage…”

oh! So you know gay people. Thank God, you even have them in your family and friends. So you are fairly aware that we are human beings, but you just prefer if we were a separate class of human beings… the kind beneath you who don’t deserve the same rights that you do. Oh, okay. Oh, but he justified it.

“With great power comes great responsibility, so that’s my responsibility, to handle everything,” Pacquiao said.

He justified by quoting Spiderman.

Despite my own anger/bitterness/annoyance with this whole situation, I urge you to read the open letter.

I had the pleasure of watching Brian perform in college. His performance was a truthful embodiment of the conflicts in being a queer Filipino.
Each culture has their own battles with acceptance of the queer community. Pacquiao was a national hero for his championship fighting, giving the Philippines and Filipino Americans another thing to brag about. Pacquiao and their food.
Sorry, but to a man who spent years cheating on his wife and deserting his family… you can not tell me the sanctity of marriage.

A very well done and informative video. Just because we made the step forward in repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell doesn’t mean that we have to stop moving forward. There is much work to be done and thought we can celebrate our triumphs, there is still much work to be done.

The black mayor, Cory Booker, of New Jersey’s largest city, Newark, spells it out exactly: Gay rights are not a political issue, or something for democracy to sort out. Those rights are supposed to be imposed without any public participation or concerns. Those rights are not a matter of your or my opinion. It is even an insult to allow the public to vote about the rights of fellow human beings.  - Charles Mudede (slog)

There is very little for me to comment on rather than just to thank and acknowledge a man, a politician, that recognizes that while leaving many things up to the vote of the people can work, it should not be up to others to judge whether or not others are second class citizens.

Although it was touching and inspiring to have President Obama come out in support of gay marriage, Mayor Booker took a step forward in claiming that the question in his nature is ridiculous, because you are asking people to decide on whether or not another person should have the same right as you.

How you would you like it if I went around the room giving everyone cupcakes but then I got to you and was like, well.. you can’t have a cupcake. Everyone says you shouldn’t get a cupcake. And then we all eat the cupcakes in front of you. Hell, some of us invite you to our desk and you can watch us eat the cupcake in private intimate setting. And then some of us will ask you to even help us eat the cupcake, but you can’t eat it. You feed us. And then you ask, why can’t I have a cupcake.. and I’m like, cuz. We voted. And you like muffins and have green eyes… so you everyone decided you can’t have cupcakes.

Did I just compare gay marriage (or marriage) to cupcakes? Yes. I did.

Why?

Because I want to get married and I want a cupcake.

you thought I didn’t really notice. But I did. I wanted to high-five you.

Yesterday I had a pair of brothers in my store. One was maybe between 15-17. He was a wrestler at the local high school. Kind of tall, stocky and handsome. He had a younger brother, who was maybe about 10-12 years old. The…

I just realized that today is my last day off for 2 months.

Cheers.

the above link talks of how a woman was fired from Macy’s for refusing to allow a transgender woman into the fitting rooms at Macy’s. The fired woman mentioned in the article is upset with Macy’s claiming that they “prefer to protect the LGBT(Q) then her religious beliefs towards homosexuality”. The group affiliated with the above link is asking for signatures for Macy’s to real their enact policy to allow people to go into fitting rooms regardless of genders.

… please don’t sign this, instead… support Macy’s for recognizing that blatant transphobia should not be tolerated. I stand with Macy.
